Enhancing Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Sustainability in Higher Education in Africa (EEISHEA) is a project funded by Erasmus and carried out by a consortium of 5 universities in Africa including Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA).
The project objective is to introduce interdisciplinary problem-based learning and other student-centered learning approaches at the program level.
As part of the project implementation, the Sokoine University of Agriculture has developed a new degree programme called BSc. Information Technology Innovation (BSc ITIN). This programme will be offered under the principles of student-centered learning approaches (SCL).
The BSc ITIN curriculum integrates aspects of innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability and it will be delivered by using a blended learning approach, a learning strategy that combines conventional education with online learning. For example, someone could take an online course to learn the basics of a topic but then attend an in-person seminar to directly engage with experts.
The curriculum has already been approved by the Sokoine University of Agriculture senate and the revised version of the approved curriculum has been submitted to Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) for further approval.
The Workshop
On the 3rd and 4th of October 2022, the EEISHEA project organized a workshop to train SUA academic staff on the sustainability aspects integrated into the BSc ITIN curriculum.
The training was administered by Prof. Jordi Segalàs Coral (who is a Director of the Research Institute for Sustainability Science and Technology), and Prof. Elisabet Roca Bosch and Dr. Gemma Tejedor Papell from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - Barcelona Tech.
The approach adopted was Training of Trainer (ToT) and was attended by the Director of Quality Assurance Bureau – Prof. Gration Rwegasira, Director of Undergraduate Studies – Dr. Nyambilila A. Amuri, Head of Department of Informatics and Information Technology (DIIT) the department which will host BSc. Information Technology Innovation – Prof. Wulystan Pius Mtega, Staff from School of Education (Dr. Thabita Lameck Lupeja – Head of Department of Curriculum Development and Dr. Athuman, Jamal Jumanne – Deputy Dean), Head of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies – Dr. Ndetto and EEISHEA Local Project Coordinator – Prof. Camilius A. Sanga.
Others who attended the training were Subjects Matter Experts (SMEs) from DIIT (Prof. Frankwell Dulle, Dr. Alcardo Alex Barakabitze, Dr. Joseph Philipo Telemala, Ms. Anna Geofrey, Ms. Catherine Mangare), Mr. Musiba Masamba and Ms. Judith Valerian (EEISHEA project team expert in Innovation and Entrepreneurship).
The training material is based on how to use the document published by UNESCO on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) - https://en.unesco.org/themes/education/sdgs/material and other published papers on sustainability competency mapping to formulate learning outcomes and suggest learning activities and assessments for any preferred curriculum. ESD indicates how the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary to address sustainable development challenges can be infused into the curriculum.
