Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), through the REFOREST Africa Project, recently hosted a two day PhD Curriculum Validation Workshop in Arusha, bringing together academic experts, researchers and key forestry stakeholders from across the region.
Stakeholders Validate REFOREST Africa PhD Curriculum
The workshop focused on reviewing and validating a proposed doctoral curriculum designed to address Africa’s priorities in forestry, environmental management and sustainable development. Through technical presentations and interactive discussions, participants provided valuable input to ensure the programme is academically rigorous, practice oriented and responsive to real world challenges.

A key outcome of the workshop was the formal validation of the PhD curriculum by stakeholders from academia, government institutions and the forestry sector. Their endorsement confirmed the curriculum’s relevance, practicality and alignment with regional and continental forestry priorities.

The REFOREST Africa PhD programme aims to strengthen Africa’s capacity to train highly skilled researchers and professionals in forestry and natural resource management. Graduates will be well equipped to contribute to climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management and evidence based policymaking.

Led by Prof. Romanus Ishengoma, the project places strong emphasis on gender inclusivity by providing targeted support to female doctoral candidates, promoting equitable participation and diversity in forestry research.

SUA acknowledges the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) for its continued financial and technical support of the REFOREST Africa Project. The successful validation workshop marks an important milestone in advancing forestry education and research at SUA and reinforces the University’s leadership in addressing Africa’s environmental and forestry challenges.
