Navigating Through Academics for Early Career Researchers

The Department of Biosciences of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS), SUA in collaboration with ASAPbio organization prepared a public workshop to support early career researchers for their career development. The specific objectives of the workshop were

  • To improve the scholarly communication ecosystem researchers through open science.
  • To raise awareness for improving equity, inclusion and accessibility of scientific knowledge.
  • To provide researchers with information and resources for grant and journal writing
  • To equip participants with practical skills for their career success.

 

The training took place on the 1st and 2nd December 2022 at the Computer Conference Venue at the College of Natural and Applied Sciences, SUA.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Professor Wulystan Mtega (Head of Department of             Informatics and Information Technology- Guest of honor on behalf of the Principal of CoNAS) congratulated the organizers for such a brilliant idea. Stating that;

“It is high time that early career researchers gain essential skills for smooth navigation in their career journey. I congratulate the organizers and their partners for coming through with this two days’ workshop that I do believe it will be very fruitful”

Speaking after the workshop, Ms. Clara Mwasota, who is an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Biosciences, CoNAS, SUA and a 2022 ASAPbio Fellow (2022 ASAPbio Fellows – ASAPbio) spoke about the workshop. She highlighetd that the aim was to provide a space for early career researchers to discuss their journey with their peers and senior researchers.

“This workshop intended to bring together early career researchers from various institutions to learn and develop new skills from their peer and senior researchers. We believe that our participants gained such skills that will help them grow as academics/ researchers”.

The workshop had a total of 52 participants who learned about scientific writing, Preprints and Open Science, Research output dissemination, Writing Successful Grant Proposals and Working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment
