Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has launched the REFOREST Reach Community of Practice (RRCoP), a platform designed to strengthen the link between forest research and its application in policy, practice and community development across Africa. The initiative aims to translate research knowledge and innovations into practical solutions for forest, environmental and livelihood challenges.
The RRCoP was officially launched on 30 September 2026 at ICE Hall, Morogoro, by Prof. Charles Kilawe, Deputy Principal of the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism at SUA. The launch brought together researchers, students, supervisors, partner universities and stakeholders from the forestry and environmental sectors to strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The initiative builds on the network established through the REFOREST programme which had connected 78 scientists and 21 PhD and MSc students by the time of the launch. According to Prof. Romanus Ishengoma, REFOREST Project Coordinator, the Community of Practice will help extend the reach of research findings and connect them with the practical needs of communities and relevant sectors.
Through webinars, workshops and other knowledge-sharing activities, RRCoP will facilitate the use of scientific evidence in policy and practice. The platform is guided by the principle that research should go beyond publication to contribute to practical action and impact.

The initiative will also strengthen South South and North South collaboration, providing opportunities for researchers and students to exchange knowledge, experience and innovations in addressing forest and environmental challenges.
The launch marks another step in the REFOREST journey from research to knowledge, knowledge to practice and practice to impact, strengthening the contribution of science to informed policies, sustainable livelihoods and healthier environments across Africa.
