WATCH: The impacts of Prosopis Juliflora (Mrashia) on the farmer livelihoods in Tanzania

The Prosopis Julifora commonly known in swahili as ‘Mrashia’ or ‘Mgunga Taveta' is native to the Americas. It was accidentally introduced to Tanzania in 1988 by traders between Taveta County (Kenya) and Mwanga District (Tanzania).

This tree is an invasive species and is widespread in Northern regions such as Kilimanjaro and the surrounding regions. These trees are said to continue to spread in the country and if remain uncontrolled it may cause social and economic effects to farmers.

In the following video, Dr. Charles Kilawe of Sokoine University of Agriculture, features various stakeholders in northern Tanzania telling about the impacts of Prosopis Julifora on their livelihoods. Some stakeholders also talk about how involvement in the local implementation groups (LIGs) organised by the Woody Weeds project helps their community taking decisions about potential management of this species.
