SUA GENDER DESK PROMOTES A SAFE AND RESPECTFUL CAMPUS LIFE

Dr. Sarah Chiwamba, the Coordinator of the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Gender Desk, spoke to staff and students at the Mizengo Pinda Campus, and on different occasions, she highlighted the Desk’s crucial role in promoting safety and well being of both the staff and students. She explained that the Gender Desk provides confidential support, legal guidance and professional advice to victims of sexual harassment, abuse and discrimination.

Dr. Chiwamba also noted that the Desk operates under a government initiative led by the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, headed by Honorable Dr. Dorothy Gwajima. The initiative aims to strengthen social protection systems and establish effective mechanisms for preventing and responding to gender based violence.

The Desk provides services to staff, students and the surrounding community who are encouraged to engage with the Desk to ensure safe and respectful environments. Its key functions include receiving and processing complaints, offering counselling, coordinating referrals, monitoring victims’ rights and conducting awareness campaigns to prevent incidents before they occur.

Inspector Judith Mbukwa, the Regional Coordinator of the Gender Desk and Child Protection Desk at the Tanzania Police Force in Katavi Region, addressed both staff and students on the importance of prompt reporting and close collaboration with the law enforcement authorities to address harassment cases. She emphasized that the Gender and Child Protection Desk plays a vital role in protecting, addressing misconduct and promoting ethical responsible individuals who can contribute to sustainable national development.
