Smallholder farmers in Manyara Region are benefiting from a locally developed agricultural technology designed to improve planting speed, precision and efficiency, ultimately contributing to increased productivity and crop yields. Known as the SmartShamba Multi Crop Planter, the innovation offers a modern alternative to traditional planting methods, particularly for smallholder farmers.
The technology was developed by Ibrahim Meshack a graduate of Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. The SmartShamba Multi-Crop Planter was designed to respond to the practical needs of smallholder farmers by reducing the time and labour required for planting while improving seed placement and spacing.
The innovation demonstrates how the practical, technology oriented education provided by SUA can be transformed into solutions that address real challenges facing farmers.
The innovation was recently recognized among the top innovations showcased during the National Education, Skills and Innovation Week in Tanga, further highlighting SUA’s contribution to promoting home grown innovations for agricultural transformation and community development.
Ibrahim’s achievement is a strong testament to SUA’s commitment to equipping students with the knowledge, practical skills and entrepreneurial mindset needed to innovate, solve real-world challenges, create employment opportunities and contribute to Tanzania’s agricultural transformation.
