Who Are We

Climate Change and Biodiversity Institute - CCBI is one of the institutions at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) established under the SUA Charter and reports to the Senate and the SUA Council. It is led by a Secretariat chaired by CCBI Coordinator who is assisted by heads of thematic units. Administrative support to CCBI is provided centrally by SUA.

What We Do

CCBI is conducting research, offering trainings and carry out consultancy services on climate change and biodiversity, building on the existing expertise, networks and coordination across disciplines at SUA, across the country and at international level.

Goal

The goal of the Climate Change and Biodiversity Institute is to place SUA in a scientific leadership role NATIONALLY and INTERNATIONALLY on Climate Change and Biodiversity science.

Objectives

The objectives of the CCBI are:

1. 1. To conduct Interdisciplinary Research & Innovation on climate change impacts and biodiversity in ecosystems, species and carbon dynamics;
   2. To evaluate adaptation strategies (e.g., restoration, assisted migration, ecosystem-based adaptation) in terrestrial and agro-ecosystems;
   3. To support modelling of future climate-biodiversity scenarios, biodiversity hotspot mapping, and species distribution under climate change;
   4. To build capacity within SUA and other public institutions on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework as part of SDGs reporting;
   5. To promote innovations (e.g. bio-based solutions, climate–smart landscape management) to enhance resilience;
   6. To establish long-term monitoring sites in representative ecosystems (forests, savannas, wetlands, mangroves, agroforestry landscapes) for biodiversity and climate change studies;
   7. To organize biodiversity, climate, carbon, and land use data in accessible repositories;
   8. To carry out Capacity Building and Training through degree programs, long and short courses, exchange programs, internships, workshops, seminars, and knowledge exchange platforms on climate–biodiversity science and management;
   9. To facilitate stakeholder dialogues between scientists, communities, the private sector, and policymakers;
   10. To raise awareness on climate–biodiversity linkages via public lectures, media, and community outreach; and
   11. Work with national and international partners (universities, NGOs, development partners) to co-design projects and secure funding for long-term core operations, project grants, infrastructure, and fellowships.
