The members of staff and student of Sokoine University of Agriculture on Friday 27th April, 2018 said goodbye to former vice chancellor Prof. Gerald Cladius Monela after serving in the position for ten years from October 2006 to October 2016.
The farewell party which was held in his honor took place in the Sokoine University of Agriculture’s multipurpose hall and was attended by representatives from local government, staff and students, distinguished visitors, and Prof. Monela’s family as well.
Various speakers including the Chancellor of the Sokoine University of Agriculture Hon. Joseph S. Warioba congratulated Prof. Monela for the work well done during his ten year term which leaves behind great success and legacy.
During the event, heads from all Sokoine University of Agriculture units and students representatives presented tokens to Prof. Monela as a symbol to recognize his dedicated service to Sokoine University of Agriculture.
The event also involved the official handing over of the office from Prof. Monela to the new Vice Chancellor Prof. Raphael Chibunda who was appointed to the position on April 2017
Prof. Monela started his career at Sokoine University of Agriculture in December 1985 as Tutorial assistant just after obtaining his first degree in forestry. Since then he moved up through the ranks and was promoted to the highest rank of Professor in 2005. Apart from teaching Prof. Monela held several administrative positions in the University having served as Head of Department of Forest Economics (1996-2002), Country Coordinator CIFOR Project (1998 - 2002) and Dean of the then Faculty of Forestry and Nature Conservation 2002 – 2005.
