The project entitled “Creating Inclusive and Sustainable Food Systems in Refugee hosting contexts in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)” in short ECOFOOD, whose implementation started in August 2023 and ends in July 2027, was officially launched on the 10th June, 2024 by the Vice Chancellor of Gulu University in Uganda, Prof. George L. Openjuru. Also in attendance were Dr. Collins Okello, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment and some faculty members as well as project team members representing five contributing institutions led by Ruralis - Institute for Rural and Regional Research based in Norway. The other institutions are Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), and Gulu University. The SUA ECOFOOD team was represented by Prof. Dismas Mwaseba and Dr. Akwilima Mwanri. Funded by the Research Council of Norway, ECOFOOD will investigate how access to agricultural resources (land, water, farm inputs, technology, credit) and climate-resilient innovations, can foster the effective participation of women and youth small-scale food producers in local food systems. Besides, ECOFOOD will provide knowledge on barriers and incentives to adopting climate-resilient innovations within different food systems (crop, livestock, and fisheries) in refugee hosting contexts in Uganda and Tanzania.
